Drinking while eating? Should you?

The stomach is filled with gastric juices- a mixture of mucus, hydrochloric acid, and digestive enzymes.  When you eat, the gastric juices mix with the food in the stomach to promote digestion. Digestion is important for health, staying slim and mental well being.  If you are unable to digest your food properly different side effects can occur – indigestion, heartburn, irritability, bloating, lethargy, headaches and cravings.

A great tip to help encourage proper digestion is to avoid drinking with meals.  Instead, drink water 15-20 minutes before a meal and 15- 20 minutes after a meal.  When we consume liquids with our meals, we dilute the gastric juices and digestive enzymes in our stomach which makes it harder to break down food. If you are chewing adequately (creating saliva), you should be able to eat comfortably without any liquid.  Allow your saliva to naturally help you swallow your food.
